Professional pool chemical balancing means testing six specific parameters, not three, not one.

Most basic strip tests miss the readings that matter most in Los Angeles water. Blue Line Pool measures pH, free chlorine, total alkalinity, calcium hardness, cyanuric acid (CYA), and phosphate levels on every single service visit. Each parameter tells a different part of the story, and when one drifts out of range it pulls the others with it. The CDC's core guidance covers chlorine and pH, but those two readings alone do not tell the whole story. For homeowners weighing their options, understanding the difference between professional chemical balancing and DIY pool care starts with recognizing what a full six-point test reveals compared to a basic strip test.

pH
Target 7.4 to 7.6. Controls how effective chlorine is and how the water feels. High pH makes chlorine ineffective, low pH corrodes equipment.
Free chlorine
Target 1.0 to 3.0 ppm. The active sanitizer. Burns off faster in LA's UV than national guidelines assume.
Total alkalinity
Target 80 to 120 ppm. Stabilizes pH so it does not swing between visits.
Calcium hardness
Target 200 to 400 ppm. LA fill water arrives near the top. Unchecked, it scales tile, clogs equipment, and damages plaster.
Cyanuric acid (CYA)
Target 30 to 50 ppm. Shields chlorine from UV. Too little and chlorine disappears within hours, too much and it becomes ineffective.
Phosphate level
Target under 500 ppb. The primary algae food source. Requires a dedicated phosphate remover when elevated.

Los Angeles tap water arrives at your pool already stressed, high in calcium, hard by nature.

The Metropolitan Water District and LADWP both deliver water that sits near or above the upper end of the calcium hardness scale, and LADWP's own water quality data reflects it. The safe target range for pool water is 200 to 400 ppm, and LA fill water frequently comes in close to that upper boundary before your pool has been running a single day.

Evaporation makes it worse every week. When water evaporates under LA's intense sun, the calcium does not leave with it. It stays behind, concentrating in what is left. You top off with more hard water, and the concentration climbs further. Understanding why LA water is so hard on pools helps explain why calcium management is a constant priority rather than an occasional concern.
