When sequestrant isn't enough and a water exchange becomes necessary

Eventually, total dissolved solids (TDS), the cumulative measure of all dissolved minerals in pool water, reaches a point where the water is simply too saturated to hold chemistry in balance.
In a soft-water region, a pool might reach that threshold after three to five years of normal evaporation and top-off. In Los Angeles, it can happen significantly faster. Hard source water means the mineral load entering the pool during a routine refill is already high, and every gallon added after evaporation brings more calcium. TDS climbs faster.
