Your system, done right

Your filter type determines how it is serviced. We handle all three.

Pool filter service is not one-size-fits-all. Your system type changes everything about how it is cleaned.

Cartridge filters, DE filters, and sand filters each work differently, and they fail differently too. Blue Line Pool services all three across Los Angeles, so you never need to figure out which system you have before calling. Our crews identify your filter type on arrival, perform the right service for that system, and document the pressure reading before and after. One account, no guesswork.

LA conditions

How Santa Ana winds and fire season load LA filters faster than normal

Los Angeles pool filters face conditions national service guidelines were not written for.

A single Santa Ana wind event can push weeks worth of debris into your pool in 48 hours. Palm pollen, dust, combustion particulates, and organic material hit the water fast, and your filter absorbs all of it. Staying on top of routine upkeep with weekly pool maintenance is one of the most effective ways to prevent filter overload before a major wind event hits.

During wildfire season, which now runs much of the year across Ventura and LA counties, ash particles enter the water column. Wildfire ash is chemically active. It raises pH, overwhelms the filter media, and can permanently damage cartridge fabric if it is not flushed out quickly. To understand the full scope of what wildfire ash does to Southern California pools, the damage goes well beyond what a standard backwash can address.

Phosphate loading. The buildup of phosphate compounds that feed algae spikes during Santa Ana events, because wind carries organic debris directly into the pool. Elevated phosphates combined with a clogged filter create conditions for a green pool within days.

If your pool has already turned, green pool cleanup and algae treatment should be your first call, and once the water is clear, chemical balancing after high phosphate events helps prevent a recurrence. We route crews through the San Fernando Valley, Burbank, Glendale, and Pasadena corridors after every major wind event.

Your best diagnostic

How to read your pressure gauge before the next visit

Your filter pressure gauge is the most useful diagnostic tool on your equipment pad, and most homeowners have never looked at it. Every customer should know one number: your clean baseline pressure, the reading right after a professional service. Write it down. Take a photo. It matters.

Clean baseline
The reading right after a service. That number is your reference point.
8 to 10 PSI above baseline
The industry rule. It means the media is loaded and the filter needs service.
12 to 15 PSI in days
Inland areas after a wind or fire event. The filter doing its job under extreme load.

A pressure spike tells you the pump is working harder than it should, flow is dropping, and water quality is starting to suffer. Catching it early, even just texting us a photo of the gauge, helps us schedule the right service before the water turns. Homeowners can also reference pool and spa safety information from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. If the spike points to a filter beyond cleaning, our pool equipment repair and replacement covers what is needed to get the system back to full performance.

Prepared for your system

Cartridge, DE, or sand, we come prepared

Every truck carries service supplies for all three filter types, so there are no return visits.

Cartridge filtersPleated polyester elements that are rinsed and eventually replaced, never backwashed. In LA's hard water, calcium bonds to the fabric, so we use a cleaning solution that breaks the calcium bond before rinsing, which extends cartridge life.
DE filtersFossilized diatom powder as the medium, the finest filtration of the three, down to 3 to 5 microns. Backwashed, then recharged with fresh DE. After a wildfire event we often recommend a full grid inspection rather than a standard backwash.
Sand filtersA bed of silica sand, backwashed but not recharged. The lowest-maintenance option and the least fine, so it will not catch the smallest ash particles. In high-debris areas, adding a clarifier helps.

You do not need to know which system you have. We identify it, service it correctly, and explain what we found. Cartridge filters also use the least water because they are never backwashed, one reason the EPA WaterSense program highlights filter choice for pool water efficiency.

Documented performance

Pressure-in, service, pressure-out

Every filter service is documented with a before-and-after pressure reading, no exceptions.

Record pressure before serviceTells us what condition the filter was in on arrival.
Identify filter type and assess mediaCartridge fabric, DE grids, or sand bed, each gets a visual inspection.
Perform the appropriate serviceRinse, chemical soak, backwash, DE recharge, or media replacement, based on findings.
Inspect tank housing and o-ring sealA cracked housing or bad seal causes pressure loss and bypasses the filter.
Record pressure after serviceConfirms the service worked and sets your new clean baseline.
Document and shareEvery visit is logged, useful for warranty claims and future diagnostics.

One detail that matters in LA's hard water: cartridge elements should be chemically soaked, not just rinsed, at least once per season to dissolve calcium from the pleats. Rinsing alone leaves calcium in place, stiffening the fabric until flow is permanently restricted.

Clean or replace

When a filter needs replacement, not just cleaning

Some filters can be restored. Others have reached the end of their service life.

1

Diagnostics on every evaluation

We assess pressure behavior, media condition, and housing integrity. Torn or calcium-locked cartridge fabric, cracked DE grids that let powder back into the pool, or channeled sand all point to replacement.

2

How replacement is handled

We carry common cartridge sizes for Pentair, Hayward, and Jandy. DE grids are replaced as a complete set, and sand is refreshed every 5 to 7 years with fresh #20 silica to spec. Replacements meet the NSF/ANSI 50 equipment standard.

3

Post-replacement testing

We run a full cycle and re-check pressure at both the filter gauge and the pump, and verify the backwash valve seats correctly so it does not bypass unfiltered water back into the pool.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

How much does pool filter service or replacement cost in Los Angeles?
Filter cleaning typically costs less than replacement. A cartridge rinse-and-soak service is the most affordable option, while DE grid replacement or a full sand media swap costs more. Catching a dirty filter early always costs less than repairing pump damage from running against high pressure. Contact us at 805-870-5019 for specific pricing.
How do I know if my filter needs cleaning or full replacement?
Pressure is the clearest signal. If your gauge drops to baseline after service, the filter is still serviceable. If pressure stays high after a thorough cleaning, the media is spent. Torn cartridge fabric, cracked DE grids, and channeled sand are all replacement triggers. Our crews assess all three conditions on every visit and show you what we found.
How long does a pool filter service visit take?
Most filter cleaning visits take 30 to 60 minutes on-site. Replacement jobs take longer, with DE grid sets and cartridge swaps typically running 45 to 90 minutes. We record pressure before and after, so we do not leave until the reading confirms the service worked.
Do I need emergency filter service after a Santa Ana wind event or ash fall?
Yes, do not wait for your next scheduled visit. Wildfire ash chemically damages cartridge fabric when left in contact too long, and a single heavy wind event can push filter pressure 12 to 15 PSI above baseline within 48 hours. Texting us a photo of your pressure gauge helps us triage and schedule the right response quickly.
Why does Blue Line Pool service all three filter types instead of specializing in one?
Specializing in one filter type means some customers get turned away or handed off. Every Blue Line Pool truck carries supplies for cartridge, DE, and sand systems, so you never need to identify your filter before calling. Our crews confirm the type on arrival and perform the correct service, with no return visits for missing parts.
Will Blue Line Pool explain what they found, or just clean the filter and leave?
Every filter service includes a before-and-after pressure reading logged in your service record. Crews note media condition, housing integrity, and o-ring status. If replacement is needed, we explain why before proceeding. You get documentation of what was done, useful for warranty claims and spotting recurring pressure problems over time.

Book a filter inspection, especially after a wind or fire event

A filter running above baseline pressure is already costing you in pump strain, water quality, and equipment wear. If you have had a wind event, recent ash fall, or have not had your filter serviced this season, now is the right time.
