Place the bucketA five-gallon bucket on the second step, submerged about halfway.

If both levels dropped the same amount, what you are seeing is evaporation. If the pool level dropped more than the bucket, a leak is likely present, and that gap is the diagnostic signal. Run it once with the pump on, then repeat with the pump off. Some leaks only appear under pressure when water is circulating, others only when the system is static. Dye testingApplies a small amount of colored dye near suspected points, light niches, fittings, return openings, and main drain covers, and watches for movement. If dye pulls toward a gap, that is the exit point.
Shell inspectionA technician visually checks the pool shell for a crack, a structural fracture in the concrete or gunite that lets water escape into surrounding soil, common in older LA neighborhoods with soil movement.
Equipment pad checkPumps, valves, and filter connections are inspected. Leaks at the pad are the most accessible and often the least expensive to correct.
